Description

Joan’s North Wales Parrot Rescue is a registered charity founded by Joan and Mani Rakhra in May 2013 (renaming it in September 2015) that provides a safe haven for parrots in North Wales. Also based in Llandudno, they care for a wide range of parrot species—helping birds with behavioural issues, rehoming those whose owners can no longer care for them, and ensuring every placement is a proper lifelong match. The centre is entirely self-funded through donations, fundraising events, educational school visits, guest talks, and their unique charity shop in Colwyn Bay—the only one in the UK dedicated to parrot rescue—selling bric-à-brac, parrot food, cages, toys, and handmade items. With over 300 birds rehomed to date, they rely on volunteers, foster carers, and sponsors to support their mission—plus veterinary backing from Birch Heath clinic and media coverage on Channel 5 and ITV Wales. Joan’s vision is rooted in education and welfare—offering guidance to parrot owners, raising awareness of proper care, and nurturing these intelligent birds toward a happier, healthier life.
